PRINCE2 2009 FAQ

When will the refreshed edition of PRINCE2 be launched?

  • The OGC will launch the 2009 edition of PRINCE2 on 16th June 2009.
  • Manuals, workshops and examinations will be available in August.

Should I wait until after the change to undertake training and qualification?

  • No - anyone who understands PRINCE2 in its current edition (2005) should understand the new edition (2009).
  • Any 2005 edition qualification (either Foundation or Practitioner) is equally valid after the transition, as before:
    • No re qualification is required apart from the normal regular Practitioner re-registration;
    • The underlying project management method is still the same - it follows the same principles as it always did;
    • An employer should view 2005 and 2009 qualifications as equally valid;
    • Eventually registered practitioners will re-register via 2009 examinations.

How much has PRINCE2 changed from the 2005 version?

  • Anyone who understands PRINCE2 in its current edition (2005) should understand the new edition (2009).
  • The changes are primarily concerned with:
    • Being less prescriptive about exactly how activities are carried out;
    • Allowing more flexibility;
    • Using more descriptive names for activities and products.
  • In summary:
    • There are now seven explicit Principles;
    • The Components have been renamed Themes;
    • Change Control and Configuration Management have been combined;
    • The Planning process has been absorbed into other processes;
    • The sub-processes are now activities and are much less prescriptive;
    • The techniques have been absorbed into the Themes;
    • There is more emphasis on tailoring and lessons.

Are my 2005 qualifications still valid?

  • Anyone who understands PRINCE2 in its current edition (2005) should understand the new edition (2009).
  • No re qualification is required apart from Practitioner re-registration.

If 2005 qualifications are still valid, will they be seen as outdated?

  • Definitely not
  • The underlying project management method is still the same
  • PRINCE2 follows the same principles as it always did
  • An employer should view 2005 and 2009 qualifications as equally valid
  • Eventually registered practitioners will re-register via 2009 examinations.

Is there a cross over period from 2005 to 2009?

  • It will be possible to sit 2005 edition examinations until 31st December 2009.
  • Each individual training organisation will schedule a crossover date between now and the end of the year.
  • A limited amount of training in the 2005 edition will be made available for a short period after crossover.

What if I only have Foundation level and now want to do Practitioner – what are my options?

  • If you wish to complete the Practitioner qualification for PRINCE2 2005 NES AIM Academy will be offering 3 day Practitioner courses up until the end of 2009. This qualification will still be considered valid and relevant.
  • If you wish to complete the Practitioner qualification to PRINCE2 2009 you will require a bridging workshop prior to attending our standard 2 day Practitioner conversion course.
  • If you are unsure of which route to take, please contact us and we will be happy to help.

My re registration is coming up – do I have to sit the whole course again?

  • If you act quickly you may be able to re-register in a 2005 edition examination, which NES AIM Academy will be offering up until December 2009.
  • If your preference is to re-register in a 2009 edition examination attending a full training workshop is not necessary. The best advice is simply to attend a re-registration workshop if your knowledge of PRINCE2™ is fresh, otherwise a full 2 day Practitioner workshop may be recommended.
  • Please contact one of our sales advisors for advice.

Is there going to be some sort of bridging course and exam to ‘upgrade’ from 2005 Practitioner to 2009 Practitioner?

  • If you Both 2005 and 2009 qualifications will still be valid in giving delegates the PRINCE2 Practitioner Registered status. There will be no mandatory requirement to ‘upgrade’ until your re registration exam is due after 3-5 years of your original qualification.
  • NES AIM Academy will be offering companies who have trained large volumes of staff in PRINCE2 2005 bridging seminars to give an overview of the changes.
  • Individuals wishing to attend such an event should contact NES AIM Academy, as we will be running these on demand through a public schedule.
  • NES AIM Academy will also be supplying all interested delegates with a detailed briefing document which will outline all of the changes that have taken place within the refresh.

Why has NES AIM Academy changed from offering a 2 day Foundation event to a 3 day event – has the Foundation exam got harder?

  • NES AIM Academy has chosen to move to a three day event to offer Practitioner level understanding along with a Foundation level qualification.
  • This will offer a more rounded view of the use of PRINCE2, rather than simply offer delegates a chance to pass a Foundation examination.
  • The Foundation Examination has not become harder.

I have already implemented PRINCE2 2005 throughout my team / organisation – do I have to start again?

  • Definitely not.
  • There is not requirement to change anything - but an appreciation of the changes in the refreshed edition may be an advantage if ever you review your implementation.
  • Attendance at a bridging seminar would be worth considering - this will demonstrate the main changes.
  • Nothing in the 2005 edition is invalidated by the 2009 edition.

If some of my team are 2005 trained will it cause issues if the rest now do 2009?

  • This is very unlikely.
  • The changes are not fundamental, but you may consider attendance at a bridging seminar to allow those currently qualified to understand the changes which will be transparent to those trained in the 2009 edition.

I’m still not sure which route is best for me…
